Teeth Whitening
Whitening works by allowing peroxide to break down the pigment molecules held inside the tooth. Done under supervision, with the gums isolated and the concentration matched to your sensitivity, it does not soften or thin enamel. Results depend on the cause of the discolouration, which we identify before starting.
Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and simple ageing darken teeth from within, where brushing cannot reach. Whitening addresses that internal staining; surface stains are removed first by professional cleaning so the result is even.
Benefits
- Typically three to six shades lighter
- Gum barrier and desensitiser applied throughout
- Custom trays for controlled top-up at home
- No enamel removal at any stage
- Safe to repeat under supervision
The procedure
- 01 Examination to rule out decay, cracks and exposed roots
- 02 Professional cleaning to remove surface staining
- 03 Shade recorded photographically as a baseline
- 04 Gum barrier placed and whitening gel applied in cycles
- 05 Desensitising treatment and take-home tray fitting
- 06 Shade review after two weeks
Technology
Hydrogen peroxide systems with potassium nitrate desensitisers, light-cured gum barriers and calibrated shade photography.
Aftercare
The 48 hours after treatment matter most: teeth are temporarily more porous, so avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry and tobacco. Use the take-home trays as directed rather than continuously.

In our patients’ words
Four shades lighter and no sensitivity beyond the first evening. They were honest that my two crowns would not change colour, which I had not thought about.

Questions patients ask first
Supervised whitening at controlled concentrations does not remove or soften enamel. Sensitivity during treatment is common and temporary. Unsupervised high-concentration products bought online are a different matter, and we advise against them.
